The infamous Shinra corporation is draining the Planet's very life sources, 'Lifestream', and processing it into both Mako and 'stones' that hold the power to communicate with the Ancients, Materia. At this rate, 'Lifestream', which is known to keep the Planet alive, will eventually be drained dry for the use of Mako. Although Shinra is thoroughly aware of the damage and danger it is causing, it continues to operate without any feelings of guilt or whatsoever.
